In 2009, Administração de Infra-estruturas de Água e Saneamento (AIAS) was created with the mandate for institutional setting of sanitation and water supply in 130 small and medium-sized towns and sanitation and drainage-infrastructure in 151 towns. It also has the mandate for management of investment program and promotes the PSP/PPP for operation & maintenance of water supply and sanitation systems.
AIAS is the asset owner and has signed lease contracts with private operators in the various towns to run the (rehabilitated) water systems.
